Specialties & Procedures: Stomach Surgery

In addition to weight-loss surgery (bariatric or gastric-bypass surgery), stomach surgeries can also be used to treat stomach cancer and benign non-cancerous stomach tumors that are large enough to cause discomfort.

If your cancer is at the end of the stomach that connects with the duodenum, or the upper intestine, you may only need to have part of your stomach removed. This is called a partial gastrectomy. Tumors in the middle of the stomach may require a total gastrectomy. Occasionally, lymph nodes near the stomach may also be removed if an aggressive cancerous growth has been detected in the stomach.

Some stomach surgeries can be accomplished with a laparoscopic approach.

Some ulcers of the stomach require surgical correction.
